There's a lot more going on here than I thought at first glance. There's not only the contrast between the bright flowers and the dark background, which is what I noticed first, but there's also the contrast between the front and the back of the flowers and thirdly red and green are on opposite sides of the colour wheel. Well done JD!

I went out to make use of the first bit of sunshine I've seen for ages:

    Two questions:

    1) Is that an iPad on the table?
    2) Who paid for the coffee? :D

    -Kevin

I was wondering if that was an iPad on the table too. Only other thing I think it could be was the bill, but for just coffee? Probably was an iPad!

""They're going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it." Which seemed to be about web content, said the tipster."

How can that be interpreted about web content ?

How can it NOT be? Maybe not web, but it was obviously about content I would say!

Now thats a publicity stunt if ever I saw one!

Ya, actually one of the first things that popped into my mind about this is that it was planned to help both companies images and relationship seem better in the press!

He rich, yet he wears the same thing every day?

He's very into simplicity and minimalism, just look at the way apple products are designed. I think its a conscious choice to wear a simple black turtleneck and jeans, even though he could easily afford any clothes he wanted.

Yes, it is a conscious decision on Steve's part. Kind of cool if you think about it. Not my cup of tea though haha :D Honestly, it seems weird whenever I see Steve dressed in anything BUT the black turtle neck and blue jeans with his New Balance sneakers lol!

Though it would be lovely to have Aperture on the iPad to cover my hobby needs but it would require some from of local wireless storage access as i don't think many 25MB images would fit on 64GB.

Yeah, only a couple 1000 25MB pictures would fit on a Ipad 64GB, not near enough.

The only people who like these ads are mac users. They make the zealots feel special and supperior which might have been the whole point. As said before, you never get customers by making fun of them. These ads only alienate POTENTIAL customers, thats not a success and its not brilliant. So far apple users are the only ones defending these ads as representing products rather than the people who use the products. If everyone else doesnt see it the same way then the ad is a failure no matter how much people argue, once the target audience misses the point then youve lost. Youll get absolutely nowhere asking "are these ads elistist?" on a mac forum, go ask it on a forum with a high number of PC users and Im sure the responses will be 100% different. Computers arent cheap, if you make fun of someone who spent a lot of money on something, something they probably like a lot, youll just make them defend themselves if you act like they made a stupid decision. I mean jeez, how is that not common sense?

While Im sure they made a few sales with the ads (or pushed a lot of people on the edge of getting a mac back over to the PC side), they could have made MUCH better ones that didnt make fun of potential customers. HP's commercials are good examples of how to sell a computer, they show celebrities and all the things they do on their laptop. Someone new to computers is going to see that ad much more favorably over the apple ad since it actually shows why they should get a computer rather than how stupid everyone else is for not having a mac.

The ads were well executed like usual, but the stupid idea strengthens the stereotype of apple user elitism. I think apple should try to fix that stereotype rather than keep reinforcing it. Instead of saying "hey dumbass, stop playing with calculator and get a mac" in a passive aggressive way, they could have said "pc's are cool but you might find that macs are better at a lot of things, check it out."

I think there's a lot wrong with the above. I know plenty of people who either don't care at all about computers or don't really care for Macs (my girlfriend, for example) who find them humorous.

MY TV Production students all think they're great advertising, technically sound, and the subtle humor (not elitist attitudes) that really convey humor to a broad crowd, even if you don't get all of the reasons why the in-jokes are there.

As far as asking a PC user a Mac-biased question, well that's just stupid. I could riff on how it's like pro-life forum and talking about choice, etc. but I'll just leave it at this.

Bottom line, which I think nearly everyone missed, is that they are commercials, they are silly, and no one should really take them too seriously. If Justin Long single-handedly turned you off to computing with Macs, then--I hate to say this--you are probably a d-bag.

I have read that you should find a type of photography that you're good at and stick with it rather than try to be a jack of all trades type. Trying to do sports, weddings and landscape all at once may not be the best idea, for example.
Agreed. I couldn't see myself doing stuff like wedding photography or school photography; some things aren't for you and if you force yourself to do it you'll end up miserable. Rather, I think a more appropriate way is to think of it in terms of comfort zones. I'm mostly doing indoors portraits right now, I've got the gear down and I know roughly how to get what I want in terms of lighting. That's my comfort zone. I could continue doing just that and take good pictures, but I also want to challenge myself. How can I bring lighting outside? How should I deal with harsh sunlight? These are areas outside of my comfort zone, and only by exploring them can I grow.

My own addition to the list: "don't think, just shoot".

First, it would be patented material, not copyrighted material. And patent infringement, especially design patents, is really quite easy to pursue.

Quite possibly there are no actual patents covering the design of the case (would not pass requirement for non-obviousness or inventive step, unless some exotic materials are used, for example). What they no doubt have is an industrial design right to the case, which are called design patents in the US. They might also have trademark protection on shape. And, naturally, a contract with the actual manufacturer, which might pursue the person for stealing their products, if the products are not legally the property of Apple. This would not be an option if they are produced by some third party. There may be copyrights involved, if the product is deemed to pass the "threshold of originality". Some countries have laws on good business practices, which may apply in this case.

All in all, if it seems unlikely that a 17-year old kid could legally sell this stuff and make a bundle, it is probably true.

Technically 60% of the voting public did not want a conservative government. Only 40% voted conservative, another reason why we need a two party system or proportional representation.

80% didn't want a liberal government, 70% didn't want a NDP government. Conservatives won the majority of seats, now let them run the show for a while.

What's wrong with a keyboard or touch typing? I guess I don't see where you're going with this, as typing on a touch screen for long pieces of work or long periods of time is far less efficient. I see where the touch interface has its uses, but in some places it's just far less practical.

You *can* touch type on an iPad, though. I type long emails on it without looking at the screen. I wonder if people just assume you can't, so they don't try.

    That's so disgusting.

Why? Everyone needs to be taking cuts including PPH. I am a Democrat, however I know if it were not for the Republicans controlling the House right now the talk would be of increasing spending instead of cutting spending.

I think everyone can agree that we need to get spending under control and every department and entitlement program should be looked at and take cuts if necessary. What I would really like to see is an across the board 10% cut if I had it my way. That won't get rid of the deficit, but it would help.

The fact that congress cannot construct a budget is simply a failure of them to perform their duties. Part of the reason is that the motivation to avoid a shutdown isn't great enough, thus I propose a two-fold solution to motivate them a little

    1) Congress persons do not get paid during the shutdown. Perhaps if they were to not get paid they would be more motivated.

    2) In the event of a shutdown all members of congress immediately become ineligible to run for re-election for their current position and ineligible to run in any other federal election. Since a shutdown means they've failed, they shouldn't be allowed to continue.

First off, nice location! :D (born/raised in Omaha)

I'd go a bit further on your first solution. If they don't pass a budget by a given day, not only do they not get paid during the shutdown, but their pay goes towards keeping the government running while they work on that budget. In short, if they don't pass it, they work for free until they get it.

I still say that during the SOTU, Obama should have told everyone that he is putting the presidential salary towards the budget, and have asked Congress to do the same. Then sit back and see what they do. If they don't, they would have shown who they really are to their constituents. This goes for both Blues, Reds, and any/all parties inbetween.

    BL.

I've had anesthesia many times (too many times) four or five times via IV and once or twice with gas for various surgical operations. (Yeah, my health sucks.) I've never had any problems from the anesthesia though. You'll wake up very dry, your mouth will feel like a desert, but that's about the worst of it. I would imagine the pain you'll have from your back will probably be your main concern.

Depending on the operation being performed you might be out of it for several hours. I know for a couple of surgeries I had on my lungs - they were done in the morning and I didn't wake up until evening.

Good luck. Hope all goes well and that you have a speedy recovery. Keep us posted.

Well, I have serious doubts that someone 'types in' the time for a network. I'm sure they have to configure the local towers to transmit the correct time zone, but that's not the same as typing in 2:00 AM and then waiting to the right second to press enter.

Dates and times aren't stored as hours and minute - it's usually some form of julian date, probably transmitted in UTC. It's up to the local device to correctly convert it to local time.

I note in passing that we're not hearing of any issues with regular phones - just iphones and other smart phones. Anyone have a basic phone show the wrong time?
